In the fall of 2016, I decided to make a trip westward from the Missouri River to Donner Pass, California, following as many old trail routes as practical. My main emphasis would be to follow the 1811-1812 Wilson Hunt Expedition, also know as the “Astorians,” and the trails of western Wyoming and those across the deserts of Utah and Nevada.
During this trip, I took many photos and GPS waypoint readings to document the trails and to document the routes I traveled. A total of 546 photos were taken.
I left Ames, Iowa on Sep 9, 2016 and returned to Ames on Oct 2, 2016. My schedule was dictated by wanting to traverse the deserts when it was cooler and dryer, and avoid being caught in snow storms.
